SPÅR – tracks from the Nordic School of Arts

11 October 2024 – 2 February 2025
Exhibition Hall, Pitkänsillankatu 28, Kokkola
Open Tue–Sun 11 am–4 pm, Thu 11 am–6 pm

SPÅR is a continuation in the tracks of Kokkola’s Nordic Art School, shut down in 2018, bringing tidings of the school’s former faculty and alumni from Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Curated by the former NAS teacher Ingela Bodbacka-Rak and the museum’s acting amanuensis Elina Vuorimies, the exhibition is a fascinating collection of Nordic contemporary art, full of meetings and commentary between stories and an emerging main theme of contemplative comparison between diverse techniques. All in all, SPÅR features ten Nordic contemporary artists, mainly with their latest work. The artists are Stefan Bremer, Jaana Erkkilä-Hill, Fredrik Lindqvist, Merja Pohjonen, Esa Riippa, Riku Riippa, Nina Roos, Ann-Jeannette Sjölander, Joel Slotte, and Anders Tomrén.

The Nordic Art School would have turned 40 this year, crossing into middle age.

The Life in Kokkola

21 September 2024 – 5 January 2025
Roos House, Pitkänsillankatu 39, Kokkola
Open Tue–Sun 11 am–4 pm, Thu 11 am–6 pm

Leo “Lella” Torppa (1932–2012) was a photographer from Kokkola who kept a versatile record of the life of his native city during his career. The Life in Kokkola exhibition tells the story of Torppa’s life’s work, highlighting the photographer’s deep affection for his native city. With a warm and sensitive touch, Torppa photographed the daily lives of the city residents and the small moments that are meaningful to them. His photographs also captured the transformation of the cityscape over several decades. The photographs in the exhibition evoke a bygone era – both a lost Kokkola and a lost way of life.
