Learn and experience

Museum education offers experiences, surprises, insights and activities! You can participate with your group in a workshop, guided tour or visit an exhibition while using our activity resources. Find out more about what we offer and book a visit for your group with our booking form. The museum education contents are free of charge for all day care, school and educational establishment groups located in Kokkola.

You can also explore out exhibitions without a guide. We aim to provide school groups access to our museum destinations and exhibitions also outside the museum’s opening hours. Take advantage of our resources during your visit. Welcome to the Museum!

Estates in Finland, walking tour

Learn about the Estates in Kokkola in the 19th century with the help of historical characters. The tour starts at the English boathouse (Englanninpuisto, Isokatu 50), and takes you to different destinations in the old parts of the city center in Kokkola. You will learn about e.g. the seal hunter Mats Kankkonen, school master Henrik Wahlstein, seafarer’s widower Elsa Asp and the wealthy Maria Sophia Roos. The tour suited for pupils in lower secondary school and general upper secondary school.

Duration: 1–1,5 h

Availability: during the school year, in general on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 am to 11 am

VTS tour

The Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) method is a simple method for increasing group engagement and facilitating discussions of visual art. The method uses art and pictures as a pedagogical tool for developing critical thinking skills, communication skills, language skills, cultural competence and visual literacy. The method relies on individual perception, collective perception and collective learning and doesn’t require prior knowledge. The VTS tour can be organized in connection with any art exhibition on display at the Museum. The tour is suitable for all ages.

Duration: 1–1,5 h

Availability: during the school year, in general on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 am to 11 am

Here you will find suggestions on how to learn about the history of Kokkola. The material can be used freely e.g. for educational purposes or during leisure time. Some of the materials are only available in Finnish and Swedish.

  • Can you find historical locations in the city center of Kokkola?

    The historical orienteering encourages to reflect on how the surroundings have changed over time. The material consists of pictures and questions about ten locations.

  • The cultural cycle tour takes you to Kirkonmäki or Suntinsuu in Kokkola. The destinations of both routes are marked on both maps. You can either follow the route marked on the map or choose the order in which you want to see the locations. Explore the route and descriptions of the destinations on the cultural cycling website. You can also print the map. Descriptions are in English.

  • The K. H. Renlund Museum is named after the donator of its base collection. Karl Herman Renlund (1850–1908) bequeathed a collection of art and other items to the town he was born in.

    The top floor of the Roos House displays the history of the Roos family as well as well-known artworks from the Golden Age of Finnish Art that were donated by Renlund.

    Works such as Lukeva nainen (1869) by Arvid Liljelund, Ilveksen jäljillä (1903) and portrait of Karl Herman Renlund (1902) by Pekka Halonen, as well as portrait of Catharina Sophia Roos (1828) by Johan Lind.

  • The Ostrobothnian Children’s Culture Network BARK has produced two digital escape room games that teachers, museum workers, cultural coordinators or workshop instructors can use independently.

    The Mystery of the Missing Tar

    An adventure that will take you to the maritime towns of Ostrobothnia in the 18th century. Tar is being loaded onto ships to be sold on foreign markets. Suddenly tar barrels start to disappear. Who is stealing the tar and why? Can you help catch the culprits? The Mystery of the Missing Tar combines time travel pedagogy, the excitement of escape rooms with the historical facts of Ostrobothnia in the 18th century.

    Target audience: pupils in grades 5–6

    The secret journey of Arvid – digital escape room game

    The year is 1903 and young Ostrobothnian Arvid embarks on an exciting journey to the United States. During his journey, Arvid needs your help. The Secret Journey of Arvid combines the idea of an escape room game with time travel pedagogy. It also includes a history lesson on immigration to the United States.

    Duration: about 40 minutes
