Enrolling in pre-primary education

Preschool-aged children, meaning six-year-olds, attend free pre-primary education organised by the municipality. The City of Kokkola offers pre-primary education in day care centres and in connection with comprehensive schools.

The children receive four hours of pre-primary education per day.

Taking part in pre-primary education is compulsory under the Basic Education Act. The child’s guardian is responsible for ensuring that the child attends pre-primary education or other activity that achieves the objectives of said education during the school year preceding the beginning of compulsory education.

  • The decision on granting a child a place in pre-primary education will be sent to the child´s guardian January-February 2024.

The city reserves each child born in 2018 a place in pre-primary education based on the address and language information found in the Population Information System.

The data from the Population Information System is retrieved in October-November 2023. If your family moves to Kokkola after that, or your family has moved within the municipality, please contact the early childhood education office.

Along with the decision, you will receive instructions on how to apply for school transportation, complementary day care services and transfer to another pre-primary education unit. If you do not receive a letter, please contact the early childhood education office.

The decision on pre-primary education placement will be sent electronically if you have activated Suomi.fi Messages in the Suomi.fi service. Please visit the website to activate the electronic messages.

If you have not activated Suomi.fi Messages to communicate with different authorities electronically, you will receive the decision by mail in 7 -10 days after it is sent.
