School enrolment

  • Children born in 2018 will start their first year of compulsory education in the fall of 2025. The primary method of enrolling your child in school is to use the Wilma programme online at:  https://kokkola.inschool.fi.

Each new pupil will receive more detailed instructions concerning enrolment in November-December.

If you are unable or unwilling to use the online registration system, you may request a paper form from the Education Office or print out the basic education enrolment form found on this page and send it to the Education Office.

The municipality appoints a local school for each pupil. The pupil may also apply to some other school than their designated local school on the grounds of, for example, weighted-curriculum education, applying to a special-emphasis class or some other reason that is deemed important for the child/family. In such case, the child’s guardian will be responsible for the costs of school transportation. It is possible that all wishes cannot be fulfilled in the forming of teaching groups. Separate justifications are provided for the decisions.

Applications to postpone the child’s school start with one year shall be submitted to the Education Office. If the need to apply for postponement is not yet clear when it is time to enrol your child in school, you can submit the school enrolment form and apply for postponement later. Submit the application to the Education Office as soon as you know you need to postpone the child’s school start.

For more information, please contact Secretary of education Meimi Lokkila by tel. +358 (0)40 8065146 or e-mail meimi.lokkila@kokkola.fi, and Administrative Manager Virpi Niemelä by tel. +358 (0)50 5688 201 or e-mail virpi.niemela@kokkola.fi

  • The pupil’s local school is assigned based on their home address. If the pupil’s guardians live in separate addresses, the pupil’s local school will be assigned based on the address of the guardian named as the live-in parent in the Population Information System. Other factors that are considered when determining the pupil’s primary local school include the child’s health and other special reasons, the length and safety of their school travel and the sibling principle.

Pupils may also apply to some other school than their designated local school on the grounds of, for example, weighted-curriculum education, applying to a special-emphasis class or some other reason that is deemed important for the child/family. In such case, the child’s guardian will be responsible for the costs of school transportation. More information about how to apply to weighted-curriculum education (in Finnish).
